THUS ESAU DESPISED HIS BIRTHRIGHT. Genesis 25:34
In Genesis 25:29-34, we read about a deal made between Jacob and Esau, the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah.
Jacob was cooking up a nice pot of bean soup, and Esau came in from the field, famished. He asked Jacob for some of his soup, and Jacob said that he would be glad to give him a bowl of the soup, but only if Esau would sell him his birthright. Typical brothers.
The remarkable thing is Esau took the deal!
You might well wonder why anyone would sell his inheritance for a bowl of bean soup! I mean, who would be that STUPID?! But the truth of the matter is, people do it all the time. They give up the riches and blessings that could be theirs, just so they can enjoy the immediate gratification of the bean soup.
We live in a microwave society. Everybody wants what they want NOW! They do not want to wait.
A young woman can’t wait for the right guy to come along, so she gives herself to the first guy who shows interest in her.
A young man can’t wait for a godly woman, so he goes for the first girl who bats her eyelashes at him. A man can’t wait to earn the money that he needs through hard work, so he steals.
Immediate gratification may seem very attractive when you are hungry, but there is always a price to pay, and there is usually no going back. Hebrews 12:17 says that Esau regretted his foolishness, and wanted the birthright back but “he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.”
God has great blessings in store for those who will be patient and trust Him. Don’t give up those blessings for a fleeting moment of pleasure.
Today, I want to encourage you to seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. If you will just trust Him, He will take excellent care of you.
