THE TRUTH ABOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM – What The British Have Forgotten
England
MOST of us who are married can remember the day of our wedding.
Even if we do not remember too clearly the exact wording of the vows we made, we know that we made vows and we have a good general idea what those vows were. Most of us also had, and still have, every intention of fulfilling those vows. The Minister asks the man:
“…Will you love her, comfort her, honour and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, keep thee only unto her, so long as you both shall live?”
“I will,” he says and, whether he means it or not, legally he is bound to it. His bride makes a similar promise. Then they sign their names, to the legal document recording their marriage and witnessing their vows. If, subsequently, anyone doubts that they are married, they have this document as proof that they are.
Imagine a couple who have been married for some time. They started off well, but now things have gone wrong. They no longer behave towards one another as a married couple should. You know the kind of comments which will be passed around among the neighbours; but there is one thing which the neighbours will not say:
“Things are so bad that they are no longer married.” Neighbours will not say this, for the simple reason that it is not true. They are still married. They have that important legal document. The people who attended their wedding remember it, some with photographs. The State recognizes it and has the official documentation recording it, in other words, the legality of their marriage is completely unaffected by the behaviour of the couple concerned.
Children’s Education
Most of us are aware that the standard of education in our country has fallen badly over the past thirty years, and in two notable respects:
Firstly, children are no longer taught to memorize things. They are not taught to learn “by heart” such things as their tables, or prayers, or poems or, in some schools, even their alphabet. Thus their memories are undeveloped and remain so throughout life, and their ability to remember things is severely impaired. It is not surprising then, that the leaders of our nation, when interviewed on the media, appear to be completely unaware of the content of the solemn vows made by our Head of State on her Coronation Day in 1953; and their interviewers are equally without this knowledge.
Secondly, children are no longer taught to think in logical ways. A teacher friend told of a child in her class who said: “There is no God,” and a moment later asked: “Why does God allow suffering?” The child was incapable of seeing that he could not hold both thoughts in his mind at the same time!
Facing the Facts
What, however, do we see? In our land we have an Established Church whose high officials are calling for Dis-establishment, while at the same time going around declaring that we are no longer a Christian country! But, like our still married couple, our country also has an Official Document, which carries the signature of our Head of State and bears witness to the fact that solemn vows have been made by the Sovereign and accepted by the State. Vows which our national leaders, both Spiritual and Temporal, publicly promised to help her keep, their successors being equally bound by those vows.
The Archbishop asked the Queen “…Will you to the utmost of your power maintain, the laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you to the utmost of your power preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline and government thereof, as by law established in England?…“
The Queen replied “All this I promise to do.”
Whether our members of Parliament, through whom our Sovereign acts, meant to keep this promise or not, legally they are bound to it. The Queen signed the Oath, which is the legal document recording the event, and remains proof that the promise was made.
Perhaps things started off well, but now it is all too plain that something has gone wrong. Britain no longer behaves as a Christian nation. One after another God’s Laws have been set aside. All around the country people are making comments… Does this seem familiar? Just like our imaginary married couple, Britain is busy setting aside the solemn promises she made, and we are faced with a strange anomaly, for there the similarity ends. Unlike the couple’s neighbours, the commentators on Britain’s present state declare: “Britain is no longer a Christian country… We are a pluralist society… We are a multiÂfaith nation”, these things are being said by people who ought to be acquainted with what goes on in a British Coronation Service.
Putting the Record Straight
Britain is a Christian Nation, Practising Religious Toleration.
We are not a multifaith nation. We are not Pluralist. We are not a Secular society. We are a Christian nation-not by behaviour (which is a disgrace) but by Law and Vow and Promise and simple unassailable FACT. Â
