HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN AND HER JUDAH-ISRAELITISH PEDIGREE

It has often been said that Queen Victoria knew of her direct line of descent from the Biblical King David. Two mainstream British publications, the Leeds Daily News and Vanity Fair Magazine both reported on this in 1894, as reported at the time in the British-Israel journal, The Banner of Israel, vol. 18, pages 298, 409, 482. The chart of the British royal family’s descent from King David, prepared originally by the Rev . F.R.A. Glover with the assistance of Queen Victoria, has been reproduced and is available from C.B.I.A. at our website at www.migrations.info. The cost is $16 postpaid to the U.S. and Canada. The Prince David mentioned in the article is better known today as King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne of Great Britain in 1936 “for the woman he loved,” Wallis Simpson. He was born in 1894 , and his birth name, David, caused excitement over the prospect of his becoming “King David” of Great Britain. He was always known to his family and close friends by his last given name, David. However, he chose to be crowned in 1936 with the name “Edward.” The Banner of Israel in 1894 reported on the Queen’s royal biblical descent as follows:
The following appeared in Vanity Fair of July 19, 1894 . We are glad to know that the Queen has faith in one phase at least of the modern story of the lost tribes. If she cherishes the belief that her ancestors were of the house of David, then to make that belief valuable or “a sacred possession to her Majesty,” she must know why a Judahite monarch must needs reign over the house of Israel forever. She must know that her throne is as secure as the throne of God himself, because he guaranteed it and promised that “David shall never want a man [ or woman] in his sight to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.” (I Kings 8:25, R.V.; Jeremiah 33:17, 26, R.V.; 2 Samuel 7:25 , R.V.) Herein is granted to the house of Israel a splendid blessing, since it conveys to them the assurance that they shall ever remain under a monarchy, that monarchy being already the oldest in Europe, and destined to last forever, according to the prophecies just quoted. Whether the prophecy, current it seems among our people that “when a David sits on the throne of England, the Jews will come into their own,” is likely to have fulfillment when the newly born heir to the British throne ascends it, we cannot say. We know it is wiser not to prophesy unless we know. This is one of the things we do not know, but we rejoice to think that her Majesty shares our belief to some extent in reference to our nation’s identity with the lost tribes.
We hope that the Queen’s example may be followed by many of the great ones about her, and that the clergy especially may be induced to look into a subject in which the Queen of England is to some extent in sympathy. What Vanity Fair wrote was this:
When a David is on the throne of England, then according to an old prophecy, the Jews will come into their own. And that, I think, is a consummation devoutly to be wished. I have wondered why the Jews do not go to their own place as long as I have wondered what it is that they are supposed to weep for before that Wailing Wall of theirs.
As I have once before pointed out, the Queen of England has some sort of faith in at least one theory of those who have built up the modern story of the lost tribes – namely, that which seeks to prove her Majesty’s descent from David, king of Israel, through the eldest daughter of Zedekiah, who with her sister, fled to Ireland in charge of Jeremiah, the prophet. This lady was afterwards married to one Heremon, a king in Ulster. In the royal family tree – which is among the most sacred possessions of the Queen – David’s name is engrossed at the root, while the name of the Torah is on a topmost bow that is shot from the great parent stem.
This may explain the choice of the name David, as one of the baptismal names of our newest prince, as well as the implied compliment to the Welsh people explains it.
When a certain Mr. [ F.R.A.] Glover, a clergyman of the Anglican Church, addressed the Queen on the subject about the year 1869, her Majesty sent for him to Windsor and to his astonishment, informed him that what he thought he had been the first (with infinite research) to discover, had been known to herself and the Prince Consort for many years. The Queen then caused the Royal Family tree, which is a very sacred object to her Majesty and her sons and daughters, to be shown him; and here Mr. Glover found various missing links that he had been vainly seeking. David’s name he discovered engrossed at the root of the tree, and the name of Victoria in a remote topmost branch; yet, for all that, in an unbroken straight line, all other lines having apparently ended centuries ago.”
The Banner of Israel article of 1894 continued as follows:
The Queen doubtless is satisfied by the evidence her royal family tree furnishes her that she has sprung from David. The fact adds great luster to her throne; it gives her the comforting assurance that her Dynasty will endure forever as the reigning monarchy of Great Britain, with the colonies and heathen empire appertaining thereto. She clings therefore to this belief, and rightly rejoices in it as a most sacred possession. Such being the case, why do not our great men, clergy and bishops, look into the promises God has made in such abundance to the house of Israel and ascertain for themselves whether or not our arguments in respect to our nation’s identity with the tribes are well-founded? Nothing can be easier than to make the investigation and see for themselves if the facts bear out our case or prove the claim to be false.
What the prophecies say, everyone can ascertain who has a Bible. They provide for the division of the children of Israel into two houses – Israel and Judah; they show that to the former was granted the birthright, conferring Empire, wealth, greatness, the world’s gates, the supremacy of the sea, military and naval victory, a vast heathen Empire, with the evangelizing function and love of souls for Christ’s sake . All this would be apparent from the Scriptures if men would only read them as they are written. They must not be spiritualized, but understand as the Queen understands the prophecies respecting her ancient throne; that is, as literal promises, to be literally understood.
It will not do to literalize only the curses and give them all to the Jews (because we see they are suffering those very disabilities) and to spiritualize the many promises to Israel and appropriate them to the Church. To do this will be found upon examination to be impossible. For instance, Abraham ‘s descendants were promised the possession of “the gates of their enemies” (Genesis 22:17, R.V.) The Church, however we may regard it, does not possess this blessing. “Israel obedient” was promised that they should lend to many nations but borrow from none; should reign over many nations but never submit to them (Deut. 15:6, R.V.). Lending to many nations but borrowing from none, reigning over many nations but independent of them, are very literal mundane matters. We cannot reasonably understand the Church of Christ as the lender to many nations, the ruler over many, but the slave of none. The prophecies respecting Israel’s restoration to Palestine with the house of Judah cannot possibly be spiritualized and applied to the Church without also spiritualizing the Jews and reading into the text some other name as being typified by the word “Judah.”
If we are to spiritualize such a text as Jeremiah 3:18, how are we to understand it? This promises that at a certain period of the world’s history the house of Judah or the Jews must walk to the house of Israel – and that they then shall come together (the Church of Christ and the Jews?) out of the land of the north (where may that land spiritually be?) “to the land which God gave for an inheritance to their fathers.” What forefathers have the Church? When did God give them an inheritance to which the heirs are the Christian Church and the Jews, the two united as one? Spiritualized, these and all the other connected texts are without meaning. Understood literally, as written, all difficulties vanish and the heirs of the inheritance are found to be Ephraim-Israel and Judah, the two houses to whom God gave the land of Palestine and called it repeatedly in his word “their inheritance.”
This view, so far as it connects the Anglo-Celto Saxons with the house of Joseph or Ephraim-Israel, gives every patriot in our land reason to rejoice for the glorious things spoken of our nation and country as the people of God, and must make every English Christian full of joy and gratitude that God has given us as a nation the honorable position of the Lord’s almoners of all Christian blessings and salvation by grace to all the nations. As her Davidic pedigree is her Majesty’s joy, glory, and most sacred possession, so our identity ought to make all lovers of their country here to shout for joy that God has so greatly distinguished us, recollecting, however, that our desserts are nil, and that it is only by grace we are so favoured. Let Israel, in short, praise the Lord for his goodness as we also do this day.
